Useful information on your brake pads and brake system
Depending on your vehicle’s brake system, it may use between 4 to 8 brake pads. When you step on your brake pedal it presses the brake pad against the brake rotor to slow down your vehicle. This naturally causes your brake pads to wear down over time. It’s a general rule that if your brake pads are less than 3mm thick, it’s probably time to change the pads. If you don’t change your brake pads in time, you can cause more damage to your vehicle.
How long your brake pads last depends on a lot of factors but they usually last somewhere between 30,000 and 35,000 miles. Some of the more modern vehicles have systems in place to warn you when your brake pads are low. In these vehicles you will also need to replace the brake pad sensors during a brake pad repair.
It’s also good to note that brake pads are typically repaired in pairs, meaning if you choose to get your rear brake pads replaced, both rear wheels should receive new brake pads.
Brake maintenance is important in helping to ensure your vehicle doesn’t sustain more costly damage but more importantly, it ensures the safety of you, your passengers, and others on the road. If you are hearing a squeaking, squealing, or any other irregular sound when pressing on the brakes, it’s a sign that you need your brakes serviced immediately and you should contact us today to have your brakes inspected.
